for the media in a rather unusual tellvised speech by the nra chief executive wayne lapierre. >> the media demonized gun owners. >> what role should the media play in this emotional debate? >>> a new movie about the hunt for osama bin laden revives a passionate debate about torture. >> no birth certificate, no cell phone. you guys are ghosts. >> he's right in the inner circle. >> the whole world is going to want in on this. >> is "zero dark 30" or did the filmmakers get a bit too cozy with the obama administration? i'm howard kurtz and this is "reliable sources." >>> it was billed as a press conference, but it was anything but. wayne lapierre took no argument. he called for armed guards in school and ripped the media for reporting misinformation and failing to nail the real culprits. >> in a race to the bottom, media conglomerates compete with one another to shock, violate and offend every standard of civilized society. by bringing in an even more toxic mix of reckless behavior and criminal cruelty right into our homes. >> so, is there any validity to these bombastic charges against the pr
-capacity magazines. we heard from joe manchin and joe warner, both with a-ratings with the nra. to ruth's point, chris, is there a chance that republicans could help to move them as well? >> well, i think so. i think we have seen that on the fiscal cliff issue. and the feeling here at the capitol, i've put the question to them and said, if gabby giffords, a congresswoman one of your own was almost fatally shot, and congress didn't react on gun control, what has to happen after this new event? this has changed the tenor. i was talking to a democratic leadership aide to made that point and also made the point when you have harry reid, if you remember in 2010, a tough re-election. the nra king just short of stopping him saying he was a friend of the second amendment. you have joe manchin and now mark warner. those are moderate democrats. they help bring republicans on board. maybe we would see movement. >> i want to bring in congressman yarmouth. >> good morning, chris. >> yesterday, you apologized for being silent on the issue for the last six years. what specifically do you think can get done no
fear to speak out -- not against the nra -- to speak out against survivalists. to speak out against people that want to buy assault weapon, to speak out against people -- i mean, great. if you really do -- if you believe that james madison wrote the bill of rights so people would have the ability to squeeze off that many rounds and have these extended magazine clips, if that's your america living it, that's your america. god bless you. good luck with that. if you really believe the federal government's coming, you're going to kick down your doors, what are you going to do? are you going to shoot that weapon up at the drone? lots of luck. it's not going to help you. but that's where they're positioning themselves. they don't speak out against the slaughter of 20 young children and doing anything about that because they're afraid they may offend sur vooifrlivivalists an rushing out going to walmart and buying assault weapons. they're not going to stand up to so many of these extreme forces. and mark halperin, it's killing them because, again, you look at the cnn poll. their branding's
correct and partially wrong. it looks like the nra's proposal is a lot like exactly what happened after 9/11. immediately though grabbed any federal agent they could to throw them on the planes and later on they put together a really poorly implemented program to arm pilots. and not very many volunteered for the program. i can see the reality. look. he is right in some regard. if someone shows up at a school and there is an armed principal and armed guard clearly that is not going to happen it's unseasonable for starters. it is impractical. let alone the safety implications that come out of all of this. did it work in the skies though? >> well, could argue that it is working because there hasn't been an incident but it looks like every time an american aircraft that gets hijacked there hasn't been any air marshals or both planes that have in iad's on board most of them didn't have armed marshals on them and i don't think there were any armed pilots on them either. so, the air marshall program alone is a billion-dollar program. and the armed pilots program is a lot of the pilots believe it

of the nra, standing by his comments about preventing similar mass curse. >> if it's crazy to call for putting police and armed security in our school to protect our children, then call me crazy. i will tell you what the american people, i think the american people think it is crazy not to do it. it is not going to make any kids safer. we have to get to the real problem, the real causes and that's what the nra is trying to do. there are so many different ways to evade that if you had that. you had that for 10 years when dianne feinstein passed the ban in '94. columbine occurred right in the middle of it. it didn't make any difference. i think that is phony piece of legislation and i do not believe it will pass for this reason. it is all built on lies that have been found out. heather: gun control advocates equally adamant about their position. here's democratic senator charles schumer. >> he was so extreme and so tone deaf, not even saying that guns had any part of the problem. that he actually probably helped us as we tried to pass sensible gun legislation in the congress. now he
. much has been brought up about gun control. the nra has been silent, but that changes today. doug is live in washington. they're going to have a press conference today, right? >> they are. we're going to hear directly from them about what happened last week. the president also and perhaps much of the nation will observe a moment of silence this morning to mark one week since the horrific killings at sandy hook elementary school last week. just as the national rifle association prepares to publicly respond to new gun control efforts, the president is also addressing what the administration says is the fastest growing effort they've ever seen on they're we the people petition site with more than 400,000 signature, they say, to back forms of new gun control legislation. the president took to youtube to send a message to congress. >> i called on congress to take up and pass common sense legislation that has the support of a majority of the american people, including banning the sale of military style assault weapons and high capacity ammunition clips and making sure criminals can't ta

that will strike fear in the hearts of folks at the nra because they, when he was senator biden, gave him an "f" on his pro-gun rights policies and said in 2008, few in the senate have as much experience as biden in attacking our right to keep and bear arms. they will not like the choice. but it does appear they are now going to take a serious look at, what, another assault weapons ban? what do you think is likely to come out of this? >> what was interesting in the president's press conference he was actually fairly specific what he hopes to get out of this task force. he says, it was clear it wasn't a commission. i think people who are speculating the president is using this biden task force to sort of get out of having to do implement serious gun control measures or doing kinds of things the president suggested he would do in his speech in newtown on sunday night are just wrong. i think the president is still eager to move urgently and i think the picking of vice president biden suggests that but he was fairly specific. he talked about reinstating an assault weapons ban. the president talked
